Painting Performance by Barbara Bateman

Barbara Bateman is a contemporary Australian artist whose work focuses on the intimate beauty of the natural environment, particularly the landscapes surrounding her home near the Great Ocean Road and Otway Ranges. Her art reflects her deep connection with nature, often depicting the Australian bush and coastal scenery through vibrant, textured, and layered compositions.

Her process involves detailed colour studies, where she blends hues to convey both the external beauty and her internal response to the landscape. This duality—external observation and personal emotion—is a hallmark of her practice. Barbara splits her time between her primary studio in the Otways and a secondary space in Melbourne, where she completes most of her works.

During her retrospective exhibition we are excited to offer a 2.5-hour painting performance by Barbara to experience and observe how she chooses her colours, her method of painting, and how she interacts with the canvas and medium in real time. The focus of the performance is on the process rather than the finished product, creating an informative connection between the artist and the audience​. Questions throughout the performance are encouraged.
