This beginner-friendly session guides you through layering techniques that help your artwork feel dimensional, expressive, and alive.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to use underpainting to establish form, atmosphere, and balance before adding details on top.

We’ll also explore different types of shadows — soft, sharp, warm, cool — and how to use them to enhance mood and storytelling in your watercolour pieces.

You’ll practice simple exercises, build confidence in layering, and finish with a small artwork that plays with both light and shadow.
All materials are included, and you’ll receive a digital handout afterwards so you can keep developing your skills at home.

Warm-up, materials overview, understanding values and layering.

10:10am — Underpainting fundamentals
Light washes, blocking in shapes, and building value gradually.

10:35am — Shadow techniques
Soft vs. hard edges, colour temperature, glazing for depth.

11:00am — Guided artwork
Step-by-step painting where you apply underpainting + shadow layering.

11:40am — Wrap-up
Final touches, Q&A, photos, next steps, and handout info.

Yes, all watercolour materials are included. You’re welcome to bring your favourite brush or paints if you prefer.
