A vibrant and energising presence Sarah Heneghan played most recently at The Lescar as part of Nishla Smith’s line-up that toured the UK, including a show at Ronnie Scotts in London. A musician pushing against boundaries, she has made waves with her solo drums and electronics Power Out project, and she has featured at Manchester Jazz Festival, Lancaster Jazz Festival, No Bounds and Shambala, and also previously at The Lescar in memorable gigs with Paint or Pollen and the Tim Knowles Quartet. In 2021 Sarah set up ‘Key of She’, a monthly music jam night exclusively for women and marginalised genders in Sheffield.
Charlotte Keeffe (trumpet / flugelhorn) is a ubiquitous presence on the London jazz and improvised music scene, and a remarkable and expressive musician. You may have caught her previously in Sheffield in her justifiably acclaimed RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW quartet, as well as in bands featuring Sheffield legend Martin Archer; Hi Res Heart and the Anthropology band. Elsewhere she has dueted with world-renowned trumpeter Dave Douglas, and performed in Marin Alsop’s Taki Concordia Orchestra, and also alongside Charlotte Church, Laura Mvula and Kate Nash at festivals like Glastonbury.
'...Keeffe shows notable strength of character as she runs the sonic and emotional gamut..." - Kevin Le Gendre, JAZZWISE
Tom Harris (piano) heard most recently at The Lescar with Miles Pillinger’s Quintet, is emerging as one of the most creative pianists on the UK jazz scene, a fine musician with a joyous ear for the unexpected. He’s also a composer, theatre-maker and educator, a sensitive and interactive pianist, Tom has worked with musicians including Rachael Cohen, Jean Toussaint, Rosie Tee, and Marco Woolf, as well as across disciplines including with dancers, poets, visual artists, puppeteers, videographers, and actors.
Support on this gig is provided by a short set from Will Shaw (drums/electronics) with Jez Matthews (piano/electronics), playing interactive and in-the-moment improvisations, original compositions and tunes by Thelonious Monk and Paul Motian.
You may have caught Will Shaw playing in any one of several wonderful bands on the current Sheffield music scene, including Life Aquatic Band, as one half of innovative harp/drums duo balo, and with minimalist improvisers Emergence Collective, a thoughtful and creative improviser.
Jez Matthews organises Jazz at The Lescar. You may also have heard him as one half of ambient improvising duo whale detective, and in line-ups including baleine (a joint project with balo), Foxhat, and various line-ups on the Sheffield jazz scene over many years. (photo by Kate Griffin)
