Paint a Seascape in Watercolour

Join us at the United Arts Club for a fresh, creative workshop dedicated to the art of the seascape. During this session, we will explore the techniques required to paint a moody, atmospheric coastal scene, with a specific focus on capturing the character of a breaking wave.

Capturing the energy of the sea can seem a challenging subject, but Kasper will demonstrate his method for achieving a convincing painting through natural brush handling and a simplified colour palette that avoids the trap of over-complicating details.

The workshop will be based on a three-part demonstration where Kasper will show his technique, and after each part, he will assist the students along the way.

What will be covered:

• Mastering Edges: Learn the importance of using soft edges to create a misty sky and receding foreground, contrasted with the hard edges of the crashing wave—the focal point of our piece.
• Simplifying the Scene: How to capture the essence of a seascape without getting lost in too many details.
• Atmospheric Colour: Simplifying our colour palette for a more natural, cohesive look.
• Creating Movement: Balancing brushwork to give the water a sense of flow and power.

All of this and more will be delivered through demonstrations and personalised attention.

Art materials will be provided; however, students are also welcome to bring along their own if they wish.

This workshop is not suited for absolute beginners.

About the teacher
Kasper Zier is an award winning watercolour artist living and working in Dublin. His watercolours are a mesmerising blend of realism and poetry, elevating the mundane into a dreamy quality. Using a masterful combination of clear colours, free expressive brushstrokes, and 'lost and found' edges, Kasper artfully captures the interplay of light on the city's buildings and streets. The end result is a unique painting full of atmosphere and character, carrying his personal touch and creating a lasting impression on the viewer. Kasper is a member of the The Water Colour Society of Ireland
