Post Graduate Physiotherapy CPD Course

This course is designed for qualified physiotherapists with experience in respiratory physiotherapy and an interest in working with children and young people with asthma and/or dysfunctional breathing.

Whether you work in primary, secondary, or tertiary paediatric respiratory care, this course will enhance your knowledge, practical skills, and confidence in assessing and managing these conditions.

This course will equip attendees with the skills to:

• Understand the holistic view of dysfunctional breathing and its relationship with conditions such as asthma

• Confidently assess and manage children and young people with asthma and dysfunctional breathing

• Apply practical techniques and tips across a range of ages and abilities

• Recognise differential diagnoses relevant to this population

• Understand common co-morbidities such as anxiety, and their impact on asthma and breathing control

This course will be delivered by a team of three expert paediatric physiotherapists from specialist centres across England.

Claire Hepworth

Clinical Specialist Paediatric Respiratory Physiotherapist, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital

Claire has over 18 years’ experience in paediatric respiratory physiotherapy, specialising in asthma, dysfunctional breathing, and exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction. She leads the medical and surgical respiratory inpatient and outpatient team at Alder Hey, contributes to BTS clinical statements and NHS England severe asthma initiatives, and is a specialist teacher-trainer in Buteyko breathing retraining. Claire is also a founding member of the Kid’s Cornerstone Collaborative, developing standardised assessment and training packages for CYP with asthma and dysfunctional breathing.

Charlotte Wells

Physiotherapy Lecturer, University of Suffolk

Charlotte specialises in dysfunctional breathing, including exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO), and is a specialist teacher-trainer in the Buteyko Breathing Method. She is a founding member of the Kid’s Cornerstone Collaborative, a national network of specialist physiotherapists working with children with asthma and/or dysfunctional breathing. Charlotte currently leads research on breathing retraining for teenagers with long-COVID.

Dr Nicki Barker

Consultant Clinical Practitioner Physiotherapist, Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust

Nicki is an expert in dysfunctional breathing and the creator of BreathWorks, the UK’s first clinic for paediatric patients with DB. She is a key member of the Sheffield paediatric complex asthma service and a founding member of the Kid’s Cornerstone Collaborative. Her research focuses on physiotherapy efficacy for children with DB, early identification tools, and medical technologies to support diagnosis and treatment. Nicki also contributes to national committees including the Research and Innovation Committee and the Clinical Research Steering Group at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
