'The Federation of Old Cornwall Societies are delighted that the Padstow carollers will be singing their unique repertoire of carols at Truro Cathedral this year, in a free service that is open to one and all. From the carollers themselves: ‘Rouse, rouse from your slumbers, prepare a glad voice. And join with those numbers that now do rejoice’. The old Cornish carol tradition of soaring four-part harmonies has been sung in Padstow for generations. Soprano, alto, tenor and bass, soar out over the streets and harbour on a cold clear winter’s night. Each carol is announced and then pitched before we ‘strike sound’. The words and music were gathered together in the 1960’s and bring us the book that we use today. Some use the words while others have them etched into memory. The carols often adapted or rearranged between areas often led to varying versions of the same carol. Some of the four-part anonymous compositions date from the late 18th century. They have touched the hearts of Cornish men and women the world over ever since.
This service will be live-streamed on the Cathedral's YouTube here - - at 19:00 and the replay will be available to watch after the service has finished.
