Guests will have the opportunity to create mixed-media neurographic drawings, as well as collaged bookmarks. These projects were chosen to promote mindful relaxation and reading/literacy.
To make a neurographic drawing, students draw a scribble on a piece of paper, shade in the intersections of lines to soften the corners, then use color to fill in the negative spaces. The term "neurographic art" was coined by Russian artist and psychologist Pavel Piskarev in 2014. "Neuro" refers to the nervous system, and "graphic" refers to the act of mark-making. By using mindful drawing to bring awareness to the present moment, a flow state is created (immersion in the present), which in turn may lower cortisol. In other words, this meditative drawing technique helps the brain calm down. Neurographic drawings are intended for any skill level.
Collaged bookmarks will be created with the intention of using imagery to reflect guests' interests, hobbies, or what brings them joy. Students will then be invited to check out a book from the local public library that aligns with a chosen visual theme. This project bridges functional and aesthetic qualities to encourage reading at all ages, and particularly younger students who are out of school for the summer.
