Dreams Traumas Memories: Anna Tihanyi’s Cinematic Exploration of the Female Psyche
Anna Tihanyi’s pop-up showcase at The Workshop’s P18 Gallery presents a selection from the artist’s series, depicting her lifelong investigation into the intricate, inquisitive, and at times unsettling landscape of the female psyche. Her cinematic narrative style converges individual experiences into universal realizations regarding dreams, traumas, memories, and deeds. The presentation stands as a brief assessment of Anna’s reflection on how her own perspective on the feminine experience and its visual implementation has evolved over time.
The photographic series “Hommage á Lichtenstein” (2008-2009), Anna’s first public presentation, is a thoughtful exploration of Roy Lichtenstein's iconic style through her photographic vision. By incorporating Pop Art sensibilities, she recreates and reinterprets the original paintings in contexts that resonate with her personally, all the while keeping the analog nature of distinctive components from the original works, such the speech bubbles, details of tears, and directions of the gaze.
The image of Franny, a woman sitting at a diner with a man (2012) depicts a moment of fragile introspection and revelation that includes both anguish and happiness. There are times when we sense a “kind of comfort inside, almost a revelation, that opens our soul, but at the same time we also feel a kind of pain, the sensation of an absolute, irremediable loss. A sweet catastrophe.”
In “Berlin bhf.” (2014), Anna presents fictional stations of life that she herself had to pause for or go through at some point in her life. The images are accompanied by words from Hungarian authors who describe their experiences in Berlin, the city recognized historically for its transitory nature. Rootlessness and alienation pervade the scenes, positioning the woman between a sense of permanent non-belonging and a wish to be integrated.
“Cycle of Womanhood” (2019) is a staged portrait photography series centered on feminine qualities and stereotypes, featuring the same woman, actress Andrea Osvárt as model, in a variety of settings. The series explores the complexities of female experience and complements the spiritual map of the woman, challenging the homogenous and universal ideas of womanhood.
The photographic installation titled “Breastplate (Choshen),” is a handsewn, wearable artwork, made from B&W 35mm negative slides from Anna’s personal archives. As a result, the piece is a direct metaphor for how collective and personal history and memories hold our identity together. Similarly to Biblical times where such garment originated, the shield serves a protective function; nevertheless, the transparency of slides suggests the fragility of any such guard.
While the overall focus of her “Budapest A-ZS” (2023) series is to provide an overview of personal experiences and materials from the collective memory that shine a light on the phases and faces of the Budapest she grew up in, the selected works featured now do so by emphasizing the evolution of such inner stories with women characters being in the focus.
