About this Event
The "Men of St Joseph" groups in Newcastle and Gateshead invite you to join their "Non-Extreme Way of the Cross" from Consett to Newcastle from Friday 28th to Saturday 29th March 2025.
It is a special opportunity to give the Lord Jesus a bit of your effort and suffering. Pilgrims are encouraged to awaken a good, valuable intention in their heart before taking on the challenge. They may be able to take turns carrying the cross.
The 30km route takes us along the Derwent Walk Railway Path, and then along the south bank of the Tyne, before crossing via the Redheugh Bridge into Newcastle.
Although organised by the Men of St Joseph, women are equally welcome to participate. Children may also participate in the event under the full care and responsibility of an adult.
Prayers will be jointly in English and Polish. It is hoped that two stations will also be in Malayalam.
Starts at 10pm outside St Patrick’s Church, Victoria Road, Consett, DH8 5AX: Opening prayers and logistical announcements.
Finishes at 7am (approx.) the next day at Our Lady of Czestochowa Polish Church & Chaplaincy 2 Maple Terrace, Newcastle, NE4 7SF: Closing prayers in the chapel, followed by breakfast in the hall.
A one-way coach will be available to take participants from Newcastle to Consett, but needs to be booked in advance.
There is a small entry fee to cover costs. There is a discount for early booking.
Minimum equipment: Torch (preferably a head torch, plus spare batteries), comfortable shoes (the path is mostly gravel or tarmac, with no obstacles), water and snack. We encourage you to wear a reflective vest.
