Built in 1882, this jail was state-of-the-art for its time — with steel cells, limestone walls, and a house attached where the sheriff and his family lived just feet away from murderers, bootleggers, and outlaws. It was in these very halls that JOHN DILLINGER, America’s most wanted gangster, made his famous escape in 1934, walking straight out with a carved wooden gun. Authorities were humiliated. And according to some… Dillinger may have left his mark in more ways than one.
Over the decades, inmates died behind these bars — by suicide, violence, and illness. And now, the energy they left behind still pulses through the corridors.
