...
Brett Carson (piano) and David Katz (voice) present a set of music exploring the use of text and graphic scores as a dynamic impetus and structuring mechanism for improvisation, juxtaposed with readings of their own idiosyncratic and surreal spoken word compositions.
Brett Carson is a composer, pianist, improviser, poet, and theater artist based in Berkeley, CA. His compositional work, which has been described as "fascinatingly intense" (Stephen Smoliar, SF Classical Voice), explores the juxtaposition of a plurality of musical approaches, spanning contemporary classical music, free improvisation, jazz, and progressive rock. This is combined with a penchant for the creation of imagined spaces and cosmologies, along with a deep engagement with language, expressed in the writing of his own libretti and an ongoing commitment to composing for the voice and the stage. As a pianist, he has performed internationally in the realms of free improvisation, contemporary classical music, and jazz, collaborating with a variety of musicians including Sidney Corbett, George Lewis, Lisa Mezzacappa, Nicole Mitchell, Roscoe Mitchell, Zeena Parkins, and William Winant.
David Israel Katz squeezes spiritual ascent out of total irreverence, bending spacetime with voice, movement, text and image. His Jewish art project, foreignfire, unleashes through scored performances, improvisations, installations, and recorded media the aesthetic heat potentized in heritage ritual formulations. A versatile singer, David appears in recordings by Brett Carson (Mysterious Descent) and Hauswasser (2) among others. His work appeared in such places as Tectonics (Tel Aviv), Musrara Mix (Jerusalem), and Studio Venezia (Venice Biennale). David studied Composition and Improvisation at Mills College; Ha’aretz described him as “an uber-performer,” and his art-ritual, THRESH, was praised by Jewish Currents as “an intense game you can lose yourself in.”
