About this Event
Last year, we launched the very first Outside In as a community gathering, unfolding within and beyond the Compound community. As promised, we continue this shared ritual of gathering, roaming, and crossing paths through art, music, conversation, and collective presence.
We collectively produce ourselves — and so we invite you to witness, and to join, the nurturing of an organic cultural community. Spring gives us a reason to gather again. Come spend the day with us: outside, inside, and in between.
See detailed agenda below.
Agenda
🕑: 12:00 PM - 02:00 PM
Airbrush Painting (Register in Advance)
Host: Shirkirism
Info: Join us for a free hands-on stencil and airbrush workshop exploring DIY image-making, layering, and color. Led by Compound’s tenant artist group Shirkerism, participants will begin by designing and cutting their own stencil using tape, paper, scissors, or X-Acto knives, with time built in for brainstorming and experimentation.
The second half of the workshop includes a short airbrushing demonstration, followed by the opportunity for each participant to choose their own colors and spray their stencil design onto paper.
No prior experience is needed, and all materials will be provided!
The workshop is expected to last under two hours total, so early arrival is encouraged.
🕑: 12:00 PM - 03:00 PM
Poor People Leading The Way to Poverty’s End (Register in Advance)
Host: United Workers
Info: Join us for a community storytelling workshop and conversation hosted by human rights organization United Workers. Rooted in political independence and led by poor and working-class people across race and historic divisions, this gathering focuses on collective reflection, listening, and leadership development through shared lived experience.
Participants will be invited to reflect on personal experiences related to healthcare, food access, housing, transportation, childcare, education, and the physical and emotional effects of economic hardship. Through guided prompts and open dialogue, the workshop aims to create space for connection, testimony, and collective imagination toward freedom from poverty.
This is a rolling style gathering with no strict time limitation — participants are welcome to arrive, stay, and contribute at their own pace throughout the event.
🕑: 12:00 PM - 03:00 PM
Print Archives (Register in Advance)
Host: Alternative Press Center
Info: Join us for “Print Archives: the Alternative Press Center,” a workshop and conversation introducing the Alternative Press Center (APC) and its archive of independent and alternative print media. The session will begin with an overview of APC’s history and mission, followed by a discussion of its collection and the role alternative print archives play in relation to academic libraries, preservation, and accessibility. Participants are invited to engage in an open conversation around print culture, archival practices, and the circulation of independent knowledge.
🕑: 12:00 PM - 02:00 PM
Collage Workshop (Register in Advance)
Host: VILLAGER
Info: Join us for a hands-on collage workshop that explores how imagination, perception, and creation shape our personal and collective narratives. Compound’s artist-tenant, VILLAGER, will guide participants to engage in a creative practice that reflects the interplay between our internal worlds and the external spaces we inhabit through layering, cutting, and assembling. Building on the spirit of community and artistic exploration at the Compound, this session will begin with a brief introduction to collaging, followed by a prompt exercise that invites self-reflection, followed by playful experimentation, and shared discovery, offering a space to rethink, redefine, and express who we are in relation to ourselves and the world around us.
