Draw inspiration from life and join artist Chris Ferguson for this plein-air painting workshop.
ABOUT THIS EVENT:
Painter-extraordinaire Chris Ferguson leads this 3-hour plein-air (French for "outdoors") painting workshop. Class will meet at Edgewood Park by the tennis courts. The class is open to all experience levels, from beginner to advanced. Most supplies included (see below for detailed list).
In this workshop, participants will learn the skills to paint directly from life. Painting from direct observation vs. a photograph requires seeing and painting in very different ways. Participants will use the oil medium to capture what they see, simplifying and translating the seemingly-endless amounts of information in their surroundings onto the canvas by focusing the composition, value and color. Participants will also learn how to work with the challenges that come from painting out in the elements. This workshop is open to all skill levels, from beginners and hobbyists, to those with ample experience.
Basic Supplies included (for use during class):
* 8"x10" canvas boards (2 per person)
* Basic set of oil paints to share. Colors included: Titanium White, Ivory Black, Crimson Alizarin, Cadmium Red Hue, Yellow Ochre, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Hue, Viridian Hue, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue Hue, Cobalt Blue Hue, Sap Green, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Raw Umber
* Grey Matters Paper Pallette paper
* Linseed Oil and Turpenoid
Supplies to Purchase/Bring to Class:
* Brushes: Students should purchase an assortment of Bristle and Taklon brushes in a variety of sizes
* Two glass jars w/ lids (think, recycled salsa jar, etc. – baby food jars are the best)
* Rags (1-2 old rags for cleaning and wiping brushes)
* Easel: We will have some easels available for use, but not enough for everyone. If you have your own easel, or access to borrow one, please bring it along, and let us know you plan to do so.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Chris Ferguson remembers enjoying drawing ever since he was a small child. During high school, he attended E.C.A. (Educational Center for the Arts) in New Haven, CT, an experience that he says allowed him to explore his creativity in new ways. He then went on to earn a degree in Illustration from Paier College of Art in Hamden, CT, with the intention of embarking on a career in children's book illustration. However, he quickly realized his heart belonged to fine art, and has been painting and exhibiting his work for the last 20+ years. His work has been shown in local venues in and around New Haven, including DaSilva Gallery and Kehler Liddell Gallery. Currently, his primary focus is on local scenery and landscapes. Read about his latest show, "Looking Up!" in the New Haven Indepedent, and the Arts Paper.
PLEASE NOTE: This workshop is presented by ArtEcon Initiative (www.ArtEconInitiative.org), whose mission is to produce free, or low cost, accessible arts and community programs in the Westville-West Rock neighborhoods of New Haven, CT. Your class fee goes directly towards supporting the artist's time to create and lead the workshop. We would be grateful for any additional contributions, so that we can continue to offer accessible programs.
THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS! This workshop is made possible with support from the Department of Economic and Community Development, CT Office of the Arts, which also receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, the Pincus Family Foundation, and Kehler Liddell Gallery.
