On Friday, July 19, 2024, at 7:30 p.m., a free outdoor screening of the 1997 film "Amistad" by Steven Spielberg will be held at the Canal Boathouse at Long Wharf, of the Amistad Freedom Schooner, the 129-foot reconstruction replica of the original historical schooner, as a commanding visual backdrop. Visitors can visit the schooner for an open house and “Food Truck Paradise” on Long Wharf between 3 - 7 p.m. and bring their own picnics and chairs to the deck.A collaboration of the New Haven Museum (NHM), Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition, and Discovering Amistad, and co-sponsored by the Amistad Committee, the Office of New Haven Affairs, and the Black & Brown Soul Cyclist, the screening will be preceded by an introduction exploring the film’s critical reception.
In the case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to inside the boathouse.
