Outdoor Art is an opportunity to create art alongside our children, and to explore art as a fun, messy, natural, creative process.
About this Event

Join us for Outdoor Art - a creative, messy, multi-sensory, art making experience designed for young children and their caregivers. In this class, we embrace the process of art-making to create an enjoyable experience for young learners that fosters creative thinking, exploration, and self-expression.

Outdoor Art meets the first Saturday of each month, from August to December. (To avoid the Labor Day weekend we will meet the second Saturday of September.)

This class is designed for children ages 1.5 to 6; it may also appeal to children outside of that age range depending on personal interest and individual development. Older and younger siblings are welcome to attend.

Outdoor Art is designed to be a child-led experience. Young people may wish to run, play, and explore the beautiful park where we meet. We encourage parents to follow their children's lead, whether that be through joining in the art or exploring the trails and wildlife at the park.

Outdoor Art is a program of Footprints Family Learning Center. All of our programming is offered on a sliding-scale, with a goal of increasing access to play-based learning and outdoor education opportunities.

Our fee structure is inspired by the work of Alexis J. Cunnngfolk, “The Sliding Scale: A Tool of Economic Justice,” and Britt Hawthorne, “Embracing an Equitable Sliding Scale.”

Prior to determining how much your family will pay for a class, please consider the “Green Bottle” graphic below. In the words of Alexis J. Cunningfolk, “Please be mindful that if you purchase a price at the lower end of the sliding scale when you can truthfully afford a higher price, you are limiting access to those who truly need the gift of financial flexibility.”

As we build this program, we will pursue grants and partnerships in an effort to increase the number of lower-cost offerings in future seasons.

Sliding-scale rates for Outdoor Art are as follows:

Partnership Rate: Select this rate if most of the statements in Tier 3 resonate with you. Joining the class at this rate is an act of cross-class solidarity and increases access to play-based outdoor learning in Clarkston. $20 per class for the first child, $10 for each additional child

Full Rate: Select this rate if most of the statements in Tier 2 resonate with you. This rate reflects the actual cost of the class per child if we did not offer a sliding scale. $12 per class for the first child, $5 for each additional child

Solidarity Rate: Select this rate if most of the statements in Tier 1 resonate with you. This rate is designed to make the class accessible for single-parent families, families with 4+ children, families working at below a living wage, parents who are in school, etc. $5 for one child or $10 for up to 4 children

Welcome Rate: From time to time there are circumstances in which a family has much to contribute, but not financially. If this describes you, we can discuss meaningful ways you can offer time or skills in exchange for a deeply discounted rate. There are a limited number of Welcome Rate spots available, so please register early! Contact [email protected] for more information about signing up for the Welcome Rate.
