Out of This World
The program begins with the “Moon” as imagined by classical and romantic composers, featuring Haydn’s overture from the comic opera Il mondo della luna and Dvořák’s beautiful aria “Song to the Moon” from Rusalka. The first half concludes with one of the most iconic depictions of space in modern music, John Williams’ Star Wars.
In the second half, we move from imagination to reality with a musical portrayal of the Apollo 13 mission, often described as a “successful failure.” The concert concludes by looking toward the future, exploring the sounds of other worlds through orchestral color and electronic textures in works by Grammy Award-winning American composer Mason Bates.
