About this Event

“Out in the Streets” LBGTQ Skateboarding Pop Up Exhibit at MASARTE Gallery in Santa Ana

Join us for a pop up exhibit of recent photographs and paintings that arts activist Skeith DeWine has been creating to document the Santa Ana skateboard club “Sk8 N Meet Santa Ana” as well as other LGBTQ+ and BIPOC skateboarders in Orange County. Preceding the exhibit at 6pm, will be a special screening of Mike Grosso’s “Love letters to LGBTQ+ Skateboarding” with a meet and greet and discussion with the artist and skateboarders presented by Media Arts Santa Ana with Victor Payan and Pocha Pena.

Skeith DeWine’s art pop-up presentation is an early preview of work in progress of the larger “Out in the Streets” project. For this particular pop up presentation Skeith has spent extra attention on the “Sk8 N Meet Santa Ana Skateboard Club” created by Angela Banda and Ashley Singleton, who describe themselves as a skateboarding club for all people of color who identify as female, queer, trans and/or nonbinary. Their skate club hosts monthly meet ups at various skateboard parks around Southern California. Additionally, Sk8 N Meet Santa Ana participates with other skateboard clubs throughout the state.

This past month Sk8 N Meet Santa Ana celebrated their 5 -ear anniversary of their organization, and we want to help them continue their important work to attract new athletes and sports minded individuals who may be timid to participate like potential athletes from the trans communities. Their organization creates a safe space for all athletes to explore the world of skateboarding. We would like to introduce you to their community outreach work in the skateboarding world through photography documentations and fine art created by arts activist Skeith DeWine.

"Out In the Streets" is an innovative endeavor launched by fine arts activist Skeith DeWine, who serves as the director of the California Leonardo Da Vinci Institute of Discovery. This ongoing multidisciplinary art project is graciously sponsored, and supported by the Creative Visons Foundation of Malibu, CA. Its primary objective is to uplift, shed light upon, and reclaim the overlooked histories of LGBTQ+ and BIPOC skateboarders, while also showcasing their allies and unsung heroes from within both communities who share a passion for skateboarding.

The upcoming presentation of "Out in the Streets" will be an effort between the California Leonardo Da Vinci Institute of Discovery of Costa Mesa, CA and a hosted outreach event provided by Media Arts Santa Ana (MASA) additionally a grant provided by the city of Costa Mesa. “Out In the Streets” is a project of Creative Visons Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.
