**THIS IS A FREE EVENT**Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with us at the Whatcom Museum as we honor the story of Sk’aliCh’elh-tenaut, also known as Tokitae or Lolita. This beloved Puget Sound orca was taken from her family in 1970 and sold to the Miami Aquarium, where she performed for over 50 years. To the Lummi people, a Native tribe in Northwestern Washington, orcas are kin. Members of the Lummi Nation united tribes, activists, politicians, philanthropists, and corporations in a powerful effort to bring Sk’aliCh’elh-tenaut home. Tragically, her journey ended in captivity, but her legacy lives on.
This beautifully illustrated bilingual book, created by Lummi Nation members and published locally by Village Books’ Chuckanut Editions, honors Sk’aliCh’elh-tenaut’s story. Designed for classrooms and home bookshelves alike, it shares Native stories, values, and perspectives, encouraging readers of all ages to protect our natural world and celebrating the strength of collaboration.
Start your day with a screening of "Scha'nexw Elhtal'nexw Salmon People: Preserving a Way of Life" at the Pickford Film Center on Saturday, November 23, 2024. Directed by Darrell Hillaire and Beth Pielert of Children of the Setting Sun Productions, this film features Tah-Mahs Ellie Kinley and explores the Lummi people's deep connection to their land and traditions.
After the film, join us at the Whatcom Museum for a live reading of the book by co-author Tah-Mahs Ellie Kinley and translator Na’tak’ul’tan Tino Kurtz, with illustrations by Jason LaClair projected onscreen. Co-author Julie Trimingham will lead a Q&A with the book’s creators, and Shirley Bob and her family will close the event with song and words of reflection. Don’t miss this full day of opportunities to connect with and celebrate Native voices and stories.
