About this Event
The Open University Choir's autumn concert features as its main work Mozart’s youthful Mass in F major K192, written in 1774 when the already-experienced composer was just 18. Although necessarily short to meet the requirements of his employer the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, the Mass is full of musical interest and invention, from traditional imitative choral textures to lilting dance-like movements in the modern rococo style, operatic solo lines and the brief grandeur of the Sanctus.
In 1983 the Open University commissioned from the late Robert Shaftoe a chamber organ for use by its music societies. For the inauguration of the organ in March of that year Dennis Pim wrote an anthem for choir and organ, Christ, the fair glory, which he has revised for this concert with the addition of a string orchestra. The organ will also be featured as a solo instrument.
The concert will begin with a Christmas cantata Das neugeborne Kindelein by Dietrich Buxtehude. The choir will be accompanied by the Cantoribus Ensemble and conducted by Bill Strang.
