As a Director of the Alumni of the University of Otago in America (AUOA) I’m pleased to extend a warm invitation to join other Boston-area alumni and friends to listen to an interesting and informative talk by Professor Michael Baker, one of Otago’s leading figures, and watch the sunset over Boston Harbor.

Professor Michael Baker, FRSNZ MNZM
Michael is a public health physician, epidemiologist, and active researcher in the Department of Public Health, University of Otago, Wellington. He is currently (April to September 2026) visiting the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard University as a Fulbright Senior Scholar.
Michael leads the Health Protection Aotearoa Research Centre (HPARC) which investigates ways of improving prevention and control of infectious diseases and environmental health hazards. He took a leading role in shaping NZ’s Covid-19 pandemic response, particularly the elimination strategy.
Michael has a strong interest in science communication. He founded and leads the national Public Health Communications Centre (PHCC) which is dedicated to translating research and other evidence into effective policy to improve health, equity and environmental sustainability in NZ.
About the Venue
The Outlook Lounge is located on the 1st floor of 55 Lewis St (part of the Clippership Complex) in Jeffries Point, East Boston. It is very accessible from the T being just two minutes walk from the Maverick stop on the Blue Line (exit to the downhill side of the station). Alternatively, you can arrive by Ferry from South Boston (Fan Pier) or Long Wharf. The ferries dock close by - a couple of minutes walk to the building. Some street parking may be available in the vicinity.

About your Host Phil Graham
I completed undergraduate studies (B.Sc Hons) at Otago in 1983, followed by a PhD in Chemistry at UMass Amherst. Currently I‘m the Chief Development Officer at a biotech company, Avilar Therapeutics, in Waltham MA. I joined the AUOA Board in 2019.
