OSU Day of Service | Mesa Day 2023

Join us at Portland State University Day for MESA Day! MESA Day is Oregon MESA's signature event, and reaches over 400 students from all over the state annually. At the event, students engage in hands-on challenges and STEM activities centered around our challenge theme for this year, Climate Action: Designing for Environmental Justice. They also participate in career exploration and college preparation activities in our College & Career Fair, which showcases different colleges and universities in Oregon & Washington, and Portland’s thriving STEM Industry organizations. While MESA Day isn’t open to the public, we hope you will join us as a volunteer! Joining us as a volunteer is the perfect way to support our mission of a more equitable STEM future and get a front row seat to witness invention in action! You can bring your company or organization to MESA Day, and join us with your team with an exhibitor booth, or you can explore the wide variety of individual roles and shifts we are offering our MESA volunteers. What kinds of volunteers do we need at MESA DAY? We need all types of volunteers! Read below to learn more about the different role categories we have. The following Volunteer Roles have specific shifts, otherwise we will place you in shifts based on your availability within the 7:45am-5pm timeframe. On-sites: 7:45am-12pm On-sites are volunteer-team led workshops that tackle a small problem or task that students might face in everyday life. This could be anything from learning how to program a motion-sensing light-bulb to building a straw-tower that can withstand a shake-table. On-Sites let students see the importance of STEM in daily life and give them confidence to explore solutions to these problems. Spring Challenge: 7:45am-12pm The bread and butter of MESA Day: the Spring Challenge Competition. Work with a group of volunteers to facilitate the culminating event of our students’ year with MESA as they put their prototype to the test. Competition role categories include: spec-check, scorers, prototype impound, score-runners, and more! College & Career Fair Representative: 12:30pm-4:30pm The College & Career Fair showcases different colleges and universities in Oregon/SW Washington, and Portland’s thriving STEM Industry organizations. Each college/career exhibitor will have 1-2 representatives display their work, their programs, and opportunities to our students in order to give them information about pursuing a degree and career in STEM. General Event/Event Support As a general event volunteer, you will assist in an event logistics/operations role such as: check-in, lunch, set-up, clean-up, ushering or floater--as well as many others!

Please bring Identification (Driver's License, Passport, or other Government issued ID) - Required

- Company shirt/polo or MESA volunteer t-shirt - Recommended (New volunteers will receive a MESA volunteer shirt at check-in)

- Comfortable shoes - Recommended - Reusable water bottle - Recommended

*If you are participating in the College & Career Fair with your company, please make sure to bring any materials and displays you plan to share with students.*Parking costs are covered in PSU's parking structures. Once you arrive, head towards the Viking Pavilion (Peter W. Stott Center) on Hall St, next to the PSU Library and Athletic Field. Check-in will be inside Viking Pavilion. Once checked in, you will be directed to a checkpoint where you will receive further instructions!
