Literary, musical and choreographic creative forces collide in the world premiere of Christopher Wheeldon’s Oscar©,
a full-length ballet commissioned exclusively for The Australian Ballet.
Taking inspiration from two of Oscar Wilde’s stories, The Nightingale and the Rose and The Picture of Dorian Gray, Christopher Wheeldon masterfully weaves Wilde’s triumphs and trials through the choreography.
The Australian Ballet last collaborated with Wheeldon on his award-winning musical, An American in Paris. His unique choreography makes him one of the most sought-after and highly regarded choreographers of his generation.
Joined by Joby Talbot, the composer behind the 2023 film Wonka and Wheeldon’s smash hit ballet, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland©, Oscar© is a fascinating story about one of the world’s most loved storytellers. Drawing parallels between the artist and the art, Wheeldon’s narrative ballet of whimsical fairytales and real-life struggles discerns that truth and illusion are never far apart and that great art has the capacity to live on beyond the artist.
