Course Description: Research related to the evaluation, utilization, and P.O.C development in physical therapy practice with orofacial management. To successfully implement this treatment strategy, therapists must know appropriate neuroanatomy, musculoskeletal, and exercise physiology. The purpose of this course is to educate physical therapists and physical therapist assistants in assessing, treating, as well as interdepartmental collaboration for this population. The course will update participants on current and relevant literature to help guide evaluation, patient education, plan of care development, and prescription for this population to garner success in a multi-disciplinary approach to the care of various orofacial injuries and pathologies. The breakout sessions will consist of "hands-on" work to practice assessment and treatment interventions as well as determining appropriate progressions, regression, development of working knowledge on the physiology behind treatment and explanation to patients.

IMPORTANT CEU INFORMATION:

PT/PTA- Pre-Approved for 10 CEUs total in the following states:

CA, FL, IL, KS, LA, NC, NJ, OK, TX

The following states accept multiple state chapter approvals: AL, AZ, CO, DC, GA, IN, KY, MI, MD, MO, MS, OR, PA, SC, TN, VA, WA

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: 10 hours in total-2 hours allocated to pre-reading from journals of education and 8 hours allocated to didactic, lab, and case studies. Method of instruction: 70% lecture and participation in clinical concepts, work in group for logical progression and problem solving. 30% lab including: testing and assessment, written documentation, hands-on treatment, with peer supervision and feedback.

INTENDED PARTICIPANTS: PT Solutions clinical employees to include Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants. The Physical Therapist Assistants must understand that these skills should not be delivered without supervision of the Physical Therapist and they will not be expected to deliver or administer advanced manual skills.

1. Understand the anatomy, physiology, and neurophysiology of orofacial structures.

2. Understand and perform assessment of orofacial structures.

3. Develop a plan of care with appropriate interventions for orofacial management.

4. Understand the different orofacial pathologies and how to manage.

5. Understand the interdisciplinary management of orofacial pathologies.

Physical Therapist Assistants:

1. Understand the anatomy, physiology, and neurophysiology of orofacial structures.

2. Implement plan of care with appropriate interventions for orofacial management.

3. Understand the different orofacial pathologies and how to manage.

4. Understand the interdisciplinary management of orofacial pathologies.

● 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. - Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Implications of TMD

● 10:30 a.m. – 10:55 a.m. - 10 min break then 15’ breakout session

● 10:55 a.m. – 11:20 a.m. – Review on Sleep Apnea

● 11:20 a.m.- 12:00pm – Treatment of TMD/Sleep Apnea

● 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. - Lunch

● 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Review on Trigeminal Neuralgia

● 2:00 p.m. - 2:25 p.m. - 10 min break then 15’ breakout session

● 2:25 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. - Review on Facial Palsy

● 3:00 p.m. - 3:20 p.m. - Discussion on Marketing to Orofacial Specialists (Sarah Tarpley PL – good resource on this)

● 3:20 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. - 40’ breakout session
