On February 9, 2024 on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines, Cockeysville resident and retired US diplomat Peter Kaestner became the first person in the world to spot 10,000 bird species, adding an Orange-tufted Spiderhunter to his unprecedented life list. Join us to meet Peter and hear about his remarkable journey that has crossed decades and continents.
Peter will share photos and stories about some of the fascinating birds that he has encountered and discuss their habitat needs and threats. Enjoy the stories behind his search for birds! And take away tips for better birding wherever your trail may take you.
About Peter Kaestner – Baltimore native Peter Kaestner is a retired U.S. diplomat and an active independent birder who has spent a lifetime sharing his passion. As of December 2024, he has birded in 193 eBird countries and territories. In addition to his unprecedented 10,000 species accomplishment, Peter is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records for having the world’s biggest life lists (eBird (9936) and IOC (10,058)) and as the first person to see a representative of every bird family – a feat that he accomplished in October 1986. In 1989, outside of Bogota, Peter discovered a bird new to science, the Cundinamarca Antpitta (Grallaria kaestneri). In 2024, Peter received the American Birding Association’s Roger Tory Peterson Lifetime Achievement Award.
