If you like a bit of healthy outdoor exercise and enjoy exploring the Kent countryside, why not go Orienteering at Brockhill Country Park, between Ashford and Hythe?Brockhill's lake, woods, meadows, picnic and play areas – along with the excellent Brockhill Café – make it a great spot for a day out. The park is also rich in wildlife, including marbled white butterflies, green woodpeckers and carpets of snowdrops.
The idea is to find the controls (checkpoints) using the specially prepared map. There are different courses to suit different experience levels.
Compete on your own or in a team. You don't need to be a member of an orienteering club. Timing equipment provided. Enter before the event at racesignup.co.uk
After the event - it's not far from the beach. A good place to relax if the weather is kind.
Parking for this event will be at t Augustines Primary School in Hythe next to the park's southern pedestrian entrance which is where the Start and Finish will be located. Nearest postcode CT21 4BE.
This is event 9 of the Kent Orienteering League.
Courses:
Yellow - approximately 2km, very easy on main paths.
Orange - approximately 3 km - easy/moderate. Controls (checkpoints) on smaller paths and just off paths. Good for newcomers and those progressing from yellow.
Green - approximately 4.5 km. Navigationally challenging for those with some experience.
Blue - approximately 6km. Navigationally challenging, but longer and physically tougher.
Score - no set distance, find as many controls as possible in a 1 hour time limit. Good for beginners, if you're not sure what level you're at, or need to know how long you're going to be out for.
These are straight line distances, actual distances approx 25% further.
Directions / Parking:
Follow the brown tourist signs to Brockhill Country Park. When you get to the park look for red and white orienteering signs. Parking is expected to be at a local school next to the park - more details to follow.
