About this Event
Stan Harris programs the player Hauptwerk organ to reprise great French music by Franck, Gigout, Vierne, Dupre, Durufle, Langlais, Messiaen and Alain. The virtual organ system recreates the sounds of the Cavaillé-Coll pipe organ in the acoustics of the Abbey of Saint-Étienne, Caen. We will hear midi recordings by Music Parlor organists Namhee Han, Makena James, Yuhan Niu, Peiyao Yu, and Ethan Haman!
BIOGRAPHY
Stanley Harris began violin lessons at age 3 with Grace Nicola in Columbus, Ohio and commenced public performances at age 4. By age 8, he performed for an audience of more than 1000 and by age 11, won First and Grand Prizes at the Columbus and Worthington SDA Church talent shows. He began studying piano at age 9, viola at age 12, and organ at age 13. As a Mount Vernon Academy student, he served as Chapel Organist, string teacher, soloist, chamber musician, and played in the Kenyon College orchestra. He graduated as Valedictorian in 1970. Stan won a music scholarship to Andrews University in Michigan and earned a BA with Honors in organ and violin in 1974 by studying with Drs. C. Warren Becker and Leroy Peterson. By then, he had invested about 12,000 hours in music education and practice.
Dr. Harris has served as an assistant organist at the Eastwood Seventh-day Adventist Church and a Baptist Church in Columbus, OH; at the University Seventh-day Adventist Church in Loma Linda, CA; and at the Second Church of Christ, Scientist of Los Angeles. He played violin and viola as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician. In 1988, his left hand became disabled by an injury that ended his professional music performance career. He has continued to play some music for private occasions, and churches, including 6 organ recitals at the Los Angeles Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels.
Since 1977, Dr. Harris has hosted Stan’s Music Parlor, a private chamber music series for musicians to share music with friends and family. More than 250 musicians have participated. About 1000 guests each year enjoy music and receptions with the musicians. Stan’s Music Parlor is furnished with a Steinway B grand piano and a Johannus SW-30 hybrid digital and pipe organ featuring more than 150 Hauptwerk virtual pipe organs.
After completing medical school, Dr. Harris pursued a long career in college mental health. The American Psychiatric Association granted Stanley E. Harris, MD, Distinguished Life Fellowship, its highest honor. Dr. Harris retired in 2021 after 36 years as University Psychiatrist and Clinical Professor at the University of Southern California where he continues voluntary service as an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry.
Dr. Harris is a longtime member of the American Guild of Organists. He joined the Los Angeles American Guild of Organists Chapter Program Committee for 2023. He has been named to the American Guild of Organists Clarence Dickenson Society in recognition of philanthropic contributions. He has established bequests that will honor gay organists and composers at organ conventions, and gay musicians and composers at the USC Thornton School of Music.
The Johannus organ console connects via an M-Audio 410 Firewire midi/audio interface to Hauptwerk virtual pipe organ software that uses an HP Pavilion Elite i7, 24 GB RAM computer with over 150 sample sets of virtual pipe organs and keyboard instruments on its 7.5 TB hard drives.
The organ's audio system includes 22 amplifiers, 8 sub-woofers, and over 100 music parlor, dining room, and stairwell speakers to create music in various acoustic environments. Johannus and Hauptwerk organs use 16 channels for 3D divisional audio imaging, and 4 channels each for surround acoustic enhancement.
The organ heard in this program is the Hauptwerk part of the larger instrument and uses a Sonus Paradisi sample set of the Cavaille-Coll organ in Caen, France. https://www.sonusparadisi.cz/en/organs/france/caen-st-etienne.html
