Organ Discovery Day celebrates the 30th anniversary of the magnificent Albert Schweitzer Memorial Organ, made by Fratelli Ruffatti in Padua, Italy – the shining centerpiece of Spivey Hall.But how and when did the pipe organ evolve? What music can it play? And how does it work? For answers, join us for a special screening of Spivey Hall’s award-winning 30-minute video, The King of Instruments: Science, History and Music of the Pipe Organ, and speak with its three stars: organist-in-residence Alan Morrison, organ curator, Tommy McCook of Widener and Company, and the organ’s computer operating system’s creator, Dr. Dwight Jones.
On family-friendly Organ Discovery Day, you’ll hear live performances by Alan Morrison that demonstrate the amazing sounds the organ makes in the superb acoustics of Spivey Hall. You can also ask questions of the experts, go up on stage to see the organ console, peek into the organ case, and take a backstage tour.
