When Joe Sutliff Sanders' grandparents asked him what he wanted to do when he grew up, he had an answer ready: "I want to teach comic books at a university." Decades later, he is living that dream. A widely published expert on Sandman, children's comics, graphic novels, and the path that comics have found into conversations about literacy, his most recent book is about Batman: The Animated Series, a 1990s Batman cartoon that became one of Batman's most influential iterations. In this talk, he will dip into that book as an example of how to have great conversations about Batman and use those ideas to tie together the many other ideas that are part of his current research on comics, libraries, autism, and the first library of graphic novels at the University of Cambridge.
About the speaker
Dr Joe Sutliff Sanders is University Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education, where he specialises in children's literature. He has published six books on subjects from girls' novels to children's nonfiction and comic books. He is a Fellow of Lucy Cavendish College and the co-host of multiple comic book conferences, including one in 2022 on Comics and the Global South and another in 2023 on Comics and Wellbeing.
