TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 30th between 3:30 and 5 pmEveryone is invited to join friends and neighbours as we gather locally to recognize the National Day of Truth & Reconciliation 2025, starting at the Dundas Roncesvalles Peace Garden.
This year, Grandmother Vivian Recollet shares Indigenous teachings and ceremony to respect children traumatized or lost in residential schools in Canada, and leads the annual Orange Shirt Walk. Wynona Maracle, women’s hand drummer, will accompany her.
Feel welcome to sing along to music by Roncy Jam Factory as we gather. Songsheets will be provided.
Many people wear orange tee shirts. If you can, buy yours from a trusted native source like the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto. Or, pin on a paper orange heart. Or wear an orange ribbon.
Wearing orange means to walk in step with Phyllis Webstad who had to give up her beloved orange blouse on entering the dehumanizing experience of a residential school for Indigenous children. And, now, to wear orange on September 30th is to embrace our joint Canadian future through reconciliation.
Biscuits, fruit, and cedar tea will be offered as refreshments for Walkers. We thank Shelba Deer for showing us how to prepare cedar tea.
The address of the Peace Garden is 2201 Dundas Street West, Toronto M6R 1X5. (At the intersection of Dundas, Boustead, and Roncesvalles)
The Walk takes about 15 minutes, to Garden Avenue.
We thank the Accessibility & Inclusion Resource Committee of Roncesvalles Village BIA for their enduring sponsorship of this community event.
