About this Event

Opposite People at its heart focuses on the fundamental roots of dance music from the African, Caribbean, Latin & Brazilian diasporas.

For this installment on the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month, Opposite People pays tribute to Puerto Rican, Nuyorican & Cuban music via the drum with a special live Afro Cuban Rumba performance by La Rumba de la MUSA, preceded & succeeded by DJ sets by host Mickey Pérez & special guest Gia Fu from Hong Kong.

::: La Rumba de la MUSA :::

La Rumba de la MUSA is a diasporic collective of artists who gather around the voice of the Caribbean drum. The multi-generational group counts members from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Chile, Panama, Colombia, and the US, and performs traditional Afro-Cuban rumba, a musical form with roots in the African and European musical traditions that coalesced in Cuba sometime around the end of the 19th century. Though there are strict rules that govern the structure of rumba, it is a highly improvisatory and nuanced musical form in which the singers, drummers, and dancers co-create each musical moment.

::: Gia Fu (Hong Kong) :::

Gia Fu is a DJ, selector and producer based in Hong Kong. She primarily focuses on digging and spinning Salsa and mambo gems everywhere she goes, also diving deep into all Afro-Latin music, disco and house grooves. She recently produced a Big-band Salsa album for Angel Meléndez in 2021 featuring over 30 artists including the likes of Tito Allen, Pulpo, Herman Olivera, Rico Walker & Primi Cruz among others.

::: Mickey Pérez :::

Chicago born & Miami raised, Mickey Pérez is a first generation American of Cuban & Ecuadorian descent who’s been putting down the funkiest rhythms to New York City dance floors since 2008. A Brooklyn resident since 2002, Mickey represents & presents a non-commercial, diasporic sound irrespective of national borders, spanning many different styles of dance music across Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Brasil & Black America. Mickey currently has a regular monthly show on NYC's The Lot Radio titled Bebop Porú, which runs concurrently as a monthly to bi-monthly dance party in Brooklyn & Miami. He also recently launched a community based summer music series for all ages with Toribio (Conclave/BDA) called Public Service that runs monthly across neighborhood parks in Bed-Stuy & Bushwick in Brooklyn. Previously, Mickey was a part of the legendary New York City Salsa record label - Fania Records’ Collective of DJs/Producers in 2018.
