Operations Management

Welcome to BA 341. This course provides a general management perspective on the role of operations in both manufacturing and service industries. It offers a broad survey of the concepts and techniques involved in designing and managing operations. Students explore the role of operations in building the competitive strength of the firm and in fulfilling the firm’s goal of creating value and delivering customer satisfaction. Focus is on the leading decisions operations managers must make within the wider corporate and industry context, from initial product and process design to inventory and quality management, maintenance, and development over time.

Operations Management is one of the core courses in the USJ MBA master program. Instructor: Professor Tom J. Tafolla, J.D.

Professor Tafolla has over 30 years of experience working in Silicon Valley manufacturing companies in the areas of computer manufacturing, printed circuit board testing, telecommunication systems, medical x-ray systems, integrated circuit development, genetic analysis equipment manufacturing, scientific laser systems, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and software development, among other industries.

Occupationally, Tafolla has also worked as a manufacturing design drafter, a patent and trademarks administrator, FDA regulatory specialist, hazardous materials and chemicals compliance specialist, litigation support paralegal, contracts specialist and manager, legal administrative supervisor, and as a corporate legal services manager.

All of these roles and corporate experience lend themselves to giving you a strong introduction to the field of operations management.
