At the opening, the curator and lecturer in photography, Thomas Gust, will have a conversation with Yasuhiro Ogawa about his work. Afterwards, the photographer will sign his books.
Yasuhiro Ogawa is considered one of the new and strong voices in Japanese photography. Through his unique perspective and emotional depth, Yasuhiro Ogawa captures the beauty and mystery of travel and creates images that are both timeless and striking. His work retells the classic motifs and contemplative attitude of Japanese landscape photography.
The focus of our exhibition is the photographer's current series, "Into the Silence", in which Ogawa presents color photographs taken on trips to northern Japan over the past 10 years. With his Leica camera, he follows the path of a famous journey by the haiku poet Matsuo Bashō, like him, he develops poetic and mystical descriptions of nature that transform the environment into dream landscapes.
The fact that the photographs of the photo legend Sebastião Salgados brought the Japanese photographer to photography can be seen in the series "The Dreaming". For these photographs, he traveled through Asia, Africa and Central Asia for many years. In the black and white photographs, Ogawa mixes blurs, darkness and coarse grain with a lyrical attitude and harmonious elements.
The slowed down and contemplative attitude of the images speaks of the freedom of being on the move, the simplicity of life. Yasuhiro Ogawa's photographs reinforce our inner longing for the original experience of nature outside of our self-created, increasingly artificial life structures.
Yasuhiro Ogawa lives and works in Tokyo. He is one of the most important contemporary photographers in Japan and has received awards for his images, including the Taiyo Award and the Newcomer Award from the Photographic Society of Japan.
After a celebrated presentation of his images at this year's photo Basel, we are delighted to be showing these extraordinary photographic works for the first time in Germany.
