Join the Bronx Documentary Center for the opening reception of WANG’S WORLD: Photographs and Films of Harvey Wang, a major exhibition bringing together decades of work by the acclaimed New York photographer and filmmaker.

Spanning decades of photography and filmmaking, WANG’S WORLD offers an expansive look at Harvey Wang’s deeply observed portraits of people, places and everyday American life.

Wang has spent his career photographing people from many walks of life. His portraits are marked by an intimacy and directness rooted in sustained engagement with his subjects. He has also documented New York City’s changing landscape, particularly the East Village during the 1970s and 1980s—a period of profound social and cultural transformation.

An award-winning filmmaker as well as a photographer, Wang works across documentary and experimental forms. By bringing his photographs and films together, the exhibition reveals the connections between the single frame and the passage of time, portrait and story, and individual lives and the larger world around them.

The exhibition’s title reflects the breadth of Wang’s visual world: New Yorkers, artists, workers, families, strangers, neighborhoods and fleeting moments. Together, these works form a personal record of a changing city and country while reflecting Wang’s enduring interest in human connection and the act of looking.

Wang is the author of six critically acclaimed photography books. Harvey Wang’s New York was selected by The Guardian as one of the “Ten Best Books about New York City.” His photographs have been exhibited at institutions including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, the New-York Historical Society and the Museum of the City of New York. His films have screened at festivals around the world.
