Opening Mixer for The Messenger: A Retrospective by Marnika Shelton
About this Event
THE MESSENGER: A Retrospective
A Sculptural Exhibition by Marnika Shelton
Some stories are inherited. Some are silenced. All of them must be honored.
The Vine presents The Messenger: A Retrospective, a three-day sculptural exhibition featuring the work of artist, educator, and activist Marnika Shelton.
With more than 25 years of experience in the fine arts, Shelton draws on her classical training in sculpture, figurative ceramics, and portraiture to create work that confronts the complex narratives shaping our individual and collective identities. Her sculptures explore the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, class, religion, and history, inviting viewers to digest the beliefs, prejudices, and cultural legacies that influence how we see ourselves and one another.
Through the human form, Shelton gives shape to stories that have been overlooked, misunderstood, or left unspoken. Her work examines the weight of inherited histories, the construction of difference, and the ways fear, shame, and prejudice continue to shape our world.
The Messenger asks us to look beyond the surface, to consider what a figure holds, what a story reveals, and what we carry forward without question.
Over three days, The Vine will serve as a gathering place for her art, dialogue, and creative exchange, bringing audiences into contact with Shelton's work through an opening mixer, a live sculpting experience, and dedicated gallery hours.
This is an invitation to encounter art not only as an expression, but as a messenger: a vessel for memory, a witness to history, and a catalyst for understanding.
