Iconoclasms explores the rejection or dismantling of cherished beliefs and institutions established to indoctrinate people. This exhibition celebrates the deconstruction and recontextualization of artifacts from religious or institutional modalities. Promoting heretical objects, Iconoclasms challenges notions of ritual, worship, and invocation.

Historically, Iconoclasms, the destruction and defacement of religious or political objects, was driven by the belief that images can become idols or represent oppressive power. Idols were used as a tool of worship, pushing the individual further from the church. This concept that idols, objects imbued with religious omnipotence, could divide the individual from the collective consciousness of the church threatened theological purity.

The intersectionality between idol and artwork, creation as an act of worship, and artists as devoted worshipers (obsecrating at the altars of their own creativity) poses the question: is creation by nature heresy? The work exhibited in Iconoclasms explores devotion to the craft, mock vandalism, and religious idealization.

Join us on Thursday, May 14, between the hours of 5 pm and 9 pm to worship at the altar of XoXo gallery in excavation of the truth - real or perceived.

Curator’s Bio:

L.A. Crawford is a multidisciplinary artist based in Washington, D.C. who employs painting, printmaking, and sculpture in their work. Crawford’s practice reflects an engagement with materiality and form, drawing on their surroundings to challenge and reinterpret our understanding of space and the ways we construct meaning from it. Crawford received their B.F.A. in painting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and their M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Mount Royal School of Art. They were awarded the 77Art fellowship and have participated in the Art Institute of Chicago’s summer residency program in Siena, Italy. Their work has been published in the Museum of Americana catalog, and they have created installations for the Museum of Outdoor Arts in Denver, Colorado. They are currently an artist-in-residence at the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington.

Caitlin Gill received her BFA in Painting and Drawing from Towson University in 2010 and her MFA in Curatorial Practice and Art Criticism from the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) in 2013. After graduating from OCAD she was employed by Renaissance Fine Arts as an Arts Administration Assistant and eventually as Assistant Director and Event Manager. After nearly four years at Renaissance Fine Arts, Caitlin was awarded a position at the Delaplaine Arts Center as Community Outreach Coordinator where she increased outreach initiatives by 200% and partnered with organizations such as COIP (Children of Incarcerated Parents), Housing Authority, ARCH and the Frederick Center. She is presently employed by Maryland Art Place (MAP) as the Exhibitions Director and MSAC Arts Directory Coordinator overseeing the MSAC Arts Directory and all MAP’s programming needs to include overseeing their partnerships and satellite spaces with Hotel Indigo, Zeke’s Coffee, Quinn Evans, and 410 Lofts.
