FRISSON: THE RICHARD E. LANG AND JANE DAVIS COLLECTION
Oct 15 2021 - Nov 27 2022
Francis Bacon, Philip Guston, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, and others—the artists in "Frisson: The Richard E. Lang and Jane Lang Davis Collection" are icons of Abstract Expressionism. Exceptional examples of their works now live at SAM thanks to two icons in their own right, local collectors Jane Lang Davis and Richard E. Lang.
The recent Lang Collection gift by the Friday Foundation is comprised of 19 outstanding artworks that transform SAM’s holdings of postwar art, making it the most significant collection of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. Rarely exhibited in the last 40 years, the 21 works of art in Frisson—including 18 paintings, two sculptures, and one drawing—are defining works and pivotal moments of artistic development from some of the most influential American and European artists of the postwar period.
In addition to the 19 new works in the museum’s collection, Frisson features two paintings previously gifted to the museum: the portrait of Richard Lang (1978) by Alice Neel, and Andy Warhol’s double portrait of Jane Lang (1976).
