BEIJING REALISM

An old Chinese poem tells of how tree branches wanted to pierce the sky, but only managed to poke a few small holes. In Beijing Realism, Chinese artists are these branches, and they offer us glimpses into the way history plays itself out in everyday life, through the Cultural Revolution, the one child policy, economic reforms, and into the present.

This timely exhibition presents four significant Chinese and Chinese-Australian contemporary artists working in photography, video, and installation – Han Bing, Hu Xiangqian, Li Xiaofei, and Tami Xiang. Curated by Tami Xiang and Darren Jorgensen, and part of the 2023 Perth Festival.

ILONA MCGUIRE

Artist Ilona McGuire presents a solo exhibition to mark the conclusion of her residency at Goolugatup. Evolving from her recent explorations in natural pigment, Ilona reconditions the white cube gallery space to bring consciousness to the unseen ancient pre-existences beneath.

Through charcoal drawing and ochre painting – powerful ceremonial and cultural materials – Ilona considers the context of gallery and landscape. What can these materials teach us about how we unify amid dysfunction? Can we just start all over again? This is an imagined consequence of this country’s simmering tensions; a bitter explosion, charred from a hostile past, ignorant present, and this great Australian silence.

These exhibition open alongside Sounds our program of exploratory live music. First edition of 2023, acts TBA! Music starts at 7pm. Plus a full bar and woodfired pizza.

ACCESS – The gallery is wheelchair accessible and ACROD parking is available nearby. Main entry is 1.4m wide, and accessible toilet doors are 0.9m wide. Toilets are unisex. If you require an AUSLAN interpreter please contact us.

GETTING HERE – Goolugatup Heathcote is a cultural precinct located on the shores of the Derbal Yerrigan, in the suburb of Applecross, just south of the centre of Boorloo Perth, WA. It is 10 minute drive from the CBD, and ample parking is available. The closest train station is Canning Bridge, and the closest bus route the 148.
