“At the core of my practice is a deep curiosity for the natural world and a need to understand the relationship between humans and non-humans. For many in my generation, this scientific curiosity became a deep urgency, one that raises questions about how visual artists can continue to work responsibly today. We navigate a fine line between our desire to produce meaningful art and the necessity of managing our environmental footprint.
I’ve always been drawn to large-scale projects where natural materials, common or rare, are used for their inherent properties. Often set up to evolve over time, they can be physically large, present conservation challenges, and exist in situ. Yet today, I find myself questioning these instincts and seeking a shift toward simplicity.
Therefore, at Slipvillan, I wish to explore a new medium, or rather, a new scale: microscopy.
First, I want to begin by exploring Stockholm and its surroundings, learning about its history and environment while sampling materials for microscopic observation. In France, I’m an amateur naturalist, dedicating personal time to the observation and recording of the species I encounter. This practice will be integrated into my research at Slipvillan as a way of finding both materials and questions to guide the work. Many early pioneers of natural history worked in Sweden, and visits to the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet, will also be central to the project.
At the same time, I will experiment with the possibilities of creation with a microscope. What is possible at this scale? Can you draw, sculpt, mold? With what materials? Living, still, or changing? How can you make it viewable to the public? How might an exhibition be built around it?
At this point a lot of experiments will be needed, and this residency offers the ideal environment, situated as it is between city and the aquatic.”
