In Mexico City in the 1930s, Pedro Linares began crafting vibrantly colored papier-mâché sculptures of fantastical, chimeric creatures, inspired by the vivid dreams he had during an illness. His innovation produced an art form, and alebrijes are now one of the most recognizable aspects of Mexican popular art. SAMA is delighted to host David Linares, renowned Mexican folk artist and grandson of Pedro Linares, the creator of the first alebrijes, for a special two-day open studio. Engage with the artist and watch as he sculpts vibrant papier-mâché creatures to carry on his family’s legendary tradition.
