About this Event

Please note: This open session is for returning students only.

Aromatic materials are not included. Bring your own materials or purchase small quantities from us.

Our open sessions for returning students only are designed as an informal, convivial space in which to co-work with other perfumers. Relaxed and self-directed (don’t worry, we’re here to help), these sessions are a great chance to refine a formula, work out an idea or just hang out with like-minded colleagues. Let's learn from each other, and make new friends.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Relaxed and self-directed, these informal sessions are a great chance to refine your blending techniques in the presence of other scent enthusiasts and #friendswithpipettes. Open Sessions are the IAO’s longest running program. These Open Sessions: Returning Students Only are designed precisely for newcomers who have already attended a beginner class (Open Session for First-Timers, Introduction to Blending, Perfume 101), intermediate perfumers who want to explore new materials, or advanced perfumers who want to co-work with a diverse and creative community.

As a returning student, you will be able to independently tinker with materials of your choice in a casual, social setting. We have everything you need: aromatic materials (natural, synthetic, and some accords), beakers and droppers, scent strips and bottles… All you need to bring is a notebook, and and open mind. Down the rabbit hole you go!

TAKE-AWAYS

+ Explore scents and perfume-making in a self-directed, communal environment

+ Peruse and study the 400+ materials of our Public Organ

+ Refine an existing formula or work on something new

+ Make new #friendswithpipettes

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Trained at Grasse Institute for Perfumery, Julianne Lee started her journey with perfumery at the Institute for Art and Olfaction, and currently acts as the IAO’s Director of Projects. A practicing perfumer with an interest in contemporary culture, she draws from literature, art, and her deep knowledge of materials and technique to extend the creative potential for the field of perfumery.

MATERIALS + COSTS

As a returning student, you are invited to bring your own materials. If you do not have materials, run out of something, or want to work with something new, you may purchase as many vials of our materials as you desire.

Aromatic Material Costs: $4.00 (5/8 dram vial), $6.00 (1 dram vial), $2.00 (spray vial)

Refill Costs: $2.00 (5/8 dram vial), $3.00 (1 dram vial)

The $35 ticket is a lab fee that covers the reasonable use of IAO lab materials, including pipettes, scent stips, scales, and our staff time.

LOCATION

The IAO is located in Los Angeles’ historic Chinatown neighborhood, on a pedestrian street that also hosts galleries, souvenir shops, production companies, design studios, two very cool parrots, and a cat named Kiki.

Street Address: 932 Chung King Road Los Angeles CA. 90012

To find us: Chung King Road is a pedestrian-only road that runs parallel to Hill Street, between Hill St and Yale St. See more information here: http://artandolfaction.com/visit
