Tuesday mornings, starting in February and running through May, Open Level Hatha will dedicate the beginning of each practice to exploring Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga. We’ll then embody these themes in our movement practice. Expect a slower pace with longer holds to facilitate strength, flexibility, and deep awareness of each yoga shape.
We’ll start the series by breaking down the first two limbs, the yamas and the niyamas, which form yoga’s code of ethics. Translated as the restrictions and the observances, these principles are essential to carrying yoga off the mat and into your daily life.
The remaining six limbs outline the progression of a meditative practice. Each of these limbs describe a deeper inner state, beginning with stilling the body by finding a seat or posture, asana. From there, the yogi works with the breath, pranayama; quiets the senses, pratyahara; and fixes the mind on a point of concentration, dharana. This leads into meditation, reflection and spiritual insight, dhyana, and ultimately a state of absorption or oneness, samadhi.
Around 400 CE, Patanjali, an Indian sage, systematically compiled the yogic teachings of his time into Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra. These sutras or “threads” of wisdom offer guidance to those who seek meaning, personal integration, and connection in their lives. Perhaps the most famous of these teaching is the Eight Limbs of Yoga.
