About this event
Many people have strong ideas but are unsure how to protect, develop, or manage them in the early stages.
This workshop introduces participants to key areas of intellectual property and innovation, helping them understand why these topics matter for businesses, entrepreneurs, and creative ventures. Led by Prof Dinusha Mendis and colleagues at , the session offers accessible and practical insight into areas such as patents, copyright, licensing, and trade marks. Designed to make often complex topics feel more relevant and understandable,
Whether you already have an idea, are working on a venture, or simply want to understand more about how intellectual property supports business development, this session will provide useful foundations and practical insight.

Who is this session for?
This session is open to BU students, PGRs, staff, and interested external participants. It may be especially valuable for those who:
- have an idea they want to develop further
- want to understand intellectual property and innovation
- are interested in entrepreneurship, creative work, or business development
- want practical knowledge that could support future projects or ventures
- are curious about how ideas move from concept to protected business value
You do not need legal or business knowledge to attend.

About the session leads
This session is led by Prof Dinusha Mendis and colleagues at the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management (CIPPM), bringing specialist expertise in intellectual property, innovation, and business development.
