TRAINING PROGRAM IN PSYCHOANALYSIS
The Training Program in Psychoanalysis is a 4-year course of study in comparative psychoanalysis, both theory and practice. On graduating, we hope that candidates will have learned several psychoanalytic paradigms and have some understanding of the philosophical and historical assumptions underlying each. Their clinical work will have deepened by this knowledge, their personal analysis, and the shared experience of presenting their work and listening to others. MIP accepts applicants from five clinical disciplines: psychology, psychiatry, social work, mental health counseling, and psychiatric nursing. Applicants must be independently licensed in their field and good ethical standing. In addition, applicants from non-clinical disciplines with an interest in psychoanalysis are encouraged to apply to the Training Program in Psychoanalysis for Academics which is suitable for academics from multiple disciplines (e.g., philosophy, gender theory, sociology, history, etc).
The training program coursework takes place in various Boston-area offices on Fridays from 11:00 am–4:30 pm over 24 weeks: 12 classes in the Fall and 12 classes in the Spring. Personal analysis, three supervised analytic cases, a final project, and several additional courses are required for graduation. Applications for the September cohort are due May 1, 2026.

STECHLER CHILD AND ADOLESCENT THERAPY PROGRAM
The Stechler Child and Adolescent Therapy Fellowship is a comprehensive one-year training program for mental health professionals looking to specialize in psychodynamic approaches to child and adolescent psychotherapy. The program is also suitable for professionals with other orientations who wish to expand their skillset. The Fellowship offers an in-depth exploration of key topics in child and adolescent treatment and equips clinicians with the tools and knowledge to effectively address common yet challenging clinical dilemmas. Unique to the Boston area, the Stechler program integrates contemporary and progressive psychodynamic models, making it more accessible and user-friendly for clinicians than traditional counterparts. Participants will benefit from a broadening and expansion of clinical understanding, an array of technical tools, and a supportive and collegial atmosphere that promotes professional development while engaging in the complex and rewarding work of child and adolescent therapy.
The fellowship meets on Monday nights from 7:30-9:30pm on Zoom during the academic year. Applications for the September cohort are due July 15, 2026.DISCOVER MORE

POSTGRADUATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
The Postgraduate Fellowship Program (PGFP) is a comprehensive training program for mental health providers and scholars who are interested in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and theory. The program offers an in-depth exploration of a wide range of models of the treatment process, highlighting the historical contributions and sociocultural context of each model, as well as its current clinical applications. Grounded in a contemporary, comparative, and creative approach to psychoanalytic psychotherapy, the fellowship aims to enhance participants’ understanding of human nature and promote deeper, more effective and more culturally attuned clinical practice. Through a weaving together of theory and psychotherapy case presentations, we provide ample opportunity for examination of the practical issues that arise in initiating and deepening clinical work.
The PGFP meets Monday nights from 7-9:30pm at the MIP office in Brookline, MA. Depending on class size, a second cohort will be added on a Tuesday night. Applications for the September cohort are due May 15, 2026 and are reviewed as they are received. Due to the popularity of this fellowship, we suggest early application.

MEMBERSHIP AT MIP
The Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis (MIP) is a non-profit 501c3 organization founded in 1987 to provide high quality training through a comparative approach to psychoanalysis. We aim to study the history and practice of psychoanalytic thinking from multiple points of view and taught in open, continuing dialogue. MIP operates through the support of our members, and we ask that you consider joining us.
MIP welcomes everyone in the larger mental health and academic community with an interest in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy to join our membership. Our current membership brings together professionals in the clinical and academic community with our psychoanalytic candidates, postgraduate fellows, graduates, faculty, supervisors, and more. We welcome people from diverse racial & cultural backgrounds and gender orientations.
