Open For Art 2024 - Impact of art: Artist discussion

Join us at Phantom Brewery for a Panel discussion led by Eleni Doulgeraki, Art historian and Curator from Insistrum Art community. Eleni will thread together ideas on socially engaged and sustainable art practices, through panel discussion with artists and insights from their knowledge of a wider arts context. After a relaxed discussion they'll be time to socialise, have a drink and look at work from the panel.

The panel

Eleni, a dedicated Art Historian, with a background in engagement curation and external communication, she has navigated the art scene both in Greece and the UK.Recognizing challenges faced by historians, curators, and artists, she founded Insistrum, in late 2022 to foster connections among art professionals.The vision of Insistrum is to provide a safe platform actively connecting, empowering, and supporting creatives, fostering global connections among artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts.

Cheri Clayton is an artist and workshop facilitator, and delivers Jelly’s Young Creatives Project. They explore curatorial projects and community building through art. They aim to create work that is de-colonial, understanding radical love as the driving force of the work they create. Cheri is currently artist in residence at the University of Reading encampments, whose campaigning has led to the university divesting from Barclays Bank.

Julie is a visual artist, working with mixed media and works with Jelly as a workshop facilitator. She is predominately a 3D artist, drawn to creating figurative and illustrated pieces. The images she creates draws on gender inequality and unheard voices. She has mostly recently been working on creating sculptural protest art pieces related to climate change and over farming. Creating art work for a movement that can impact society to make a positive change is a real privilege.

Laura de Moxom is a Socially Engaged Artist and empathy-led Cultural Manager, she works with Jelly as General Manager as well as an Associate Artist, workshop facilitator. Laura has more than 10 year’s experience in delivering multi-artform learning and participatory experiences in the cultural sector, spanning across libraries, museums, galleries, art studios, festivals, schools and unexpected places. She is particularly excited by projects that are co-created with communities. In her own practice explores using mixed media and alternative photographic processes to create alternative archives. Conscious of the importance of sustainability she is currently exploring how to reduce the impact of her practice, as well as how creativity can be used in activism, especially as an introvert.

Suzanne Stallard is an artist, activist, and co-director of Jelly. She works collaboratively with Laura De Moxom, as part of Bold and Tender Collective, making site specific work with the community.

Since 2019, she has been working with Andrew Darnton, as a creative activist including experimenting with performances as protests, both for Extinction Rebellion, Ocean Rebellion and David Graeber Institute. In November 2021 on a road trip to COP 26 sharing a green van, making art in Skye and the Highlands, then scoring a huge media success in Glasgow (with the dead mermaids, oilheads, and fishheads) we developed an urge to gather around ourselves art which can tell the truth about the emergency, and anticipate what lies beyond it. A rapid radical transformation of what the everyday world can think of, and think possible, is required. paff is the means to pursue this enquiry.

We are a small team working behind the scenes answering your questions. If you email us via eventbrite or via our website we will answer as soon as we can.

Where are you based?

Our studios are located within Broad St Mall. You can find us on the first floor. We are the last unit before the toilets and exit to the carpark. If you get lost please ask any Broad St Mall security guard and they will direct you.

Sometimes our workshops take place in the community. Be sure to check the address on your ticket. When we are out and about in Reading town centre in Forbury Gardens or at festivals we will not know our exact location within the festival site until the day.

If I cannot make my paid workshop, can I transfer my ticket to another event or get a refund?

We are able to offer a refund or transfer your ticket to a future event if you contact us a minimum of 7 days before the event starts. After this time we cannot offer any refunds or transfers. 48 hours before the event you can contact us to enquire about a waiting list and we will endeavour to transfer your ticket.

As a charity we rely on donations and ticket sales to pay our artists and models. We always keep ticket costs to a minimum and when possible offer a limited number of tickets as a ‘pay what you can’ and a donation option if you are able to pay more.

Our free community workshops and festival workshops are often made possible due to funding by the organisers. These workshops are popular and run at capacity. If you have selected a free ticket and are no longer able to attend please return your ticket so it is able to go to people on our waiting list. At busy times there may be a short wait at the workshop table and make sure you allow plenty of time to join us.

Can I arrive early?

To allow ample time for our workshop host to prepare the space and set everything up, we kindly request that you arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before the scheduled start time. This allows us to create a welcoming atmosphere and ensure everything is ready for your arrival.

If you're curious about the space or would like to introduce your children to the workshop environment beforehand, we're more than happy to accommodate your request. Contact us and we can provide you with photos of the space or arrange a visit prior to the workshop. We want to make sure you and your family feel comfortable and excited about the experience!
