Fire and Ice (encaustic and watercolor) painting classes are coming to Hermiston!Rae Galloway Watercolor will be painting and hanging out at Hermiston Donut Shop answer your questions about what my encaustic and watercolor courses might look like. I will also have a various examples of the types of art you could make with these mediums. I've been looking forward to having a local class and want to know from all of you if you would prefer to be involved with the watercolor or encaustic courses (or both!) so that I know which one to launch first.
Rae will provide all the materials for these courses, including professional grade paints, professional woodpanels/paper, brushes, and any other tools or pieces of equipment required.
While I'm still nailing down all the details about my fee schedule, best guesses are that watercolor classes would be $25 per session and encaustic would be $30 to 40, depending on the project and materials needed.
Ultimately, I would like to be able to offer a discount when multiple sessions are purchased together, but I need a concrete sense of how many folks are likely to participate in these classes first. obviously the more interest generated, the cheaper I can get my classes. However, I am not going to go over eight people in any given session for watercolor and no more than six for encaustic, so as to ensure everyone gets the individualized attention they might need or want.
Our gracious hosts have not made this a condition of our use of their store, but I would like to encourage folks to buy a donut or a drink while we are there if you can and if you would like to treat yourself. I can attest to how delicious their donuts are!!
some of you may be asking yourself what encaustic painting is and so I have some links to share here. some of them are informational and will give you some explanation others are visual and give you a 3D glimpse at just some of the possibilities this medium can achieve. Oil paints, India inks, graphite, textiles, and more are compatible with this natural painting medium.
Instagram Reel: this started off as a watercolor painting done on watercolor paper and I added encaustic paints on top https://www.instagram.com/reel/DBS0oOgRZ5L/?igsh=MWU2aGQ3OHd6dzA5dw==
This is another Instagram reel that started as watercolor but this one has more encaustic than the last one did and has some interesting textures that I really like https://www.instagram.com/reel/DBuQeywoW1G/?igsh=dnQ0OHdjeXdienpy
most of all this one is only encaustic wax and oild paints, finished with some shellac and alcohol ink that I painted on the top layer and then burned with my blowtorch. It leads to the effect you see of white cobwebs/cells. you can also see by the greater Dimension and topographical nature of this painting that there was some carving back into the painting whilst continuing to add encaustic paint/medium to more textural areas.

and here are some links that will take you to educational articles about encaustics. essentially you're using molten beeswax and a blowtorch. This art form is so metal 🤘🔥
