YOUR INTRODUCTION TO INTERNAL FAMILY SYSTEMS
Free, open discussion and introduction.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of psychotherapy that views people as having multiple sub-personalities, or "families", within their mental systems. These sub-personalities can include wounded parts, painful emotions, and parts that try to protect the person from those emotions. IFS therapy aims to help people identify and accept these different parts of themselves, and heal the wounded parts. The goal is to help people correct problematic behaviors and grow personally!
IFS aims to:
- Liberate parts from roles they've been forced into
- Restore trust in the "self"
- Re-harmonize parts that are in conflict with one another
- Empower the "self" to lead in all parts of life
What are our PROTECTORS, according to IFS Therapy:
- Managers - Proactive Parts that try to keep us safe by controlling other parts, people, or situations (planning, controlling, criticizing, caretaking, pleasing, judging, avoiding)
- Firefighters - Reactive emergency responders that swoop in when the system is at risk of overwhelm (soothing, numbing with food/substances, distracting, dissociating, self-harm, rage, suicide ideation)
- Exiles - Vulnerable, usually young parts that hold trauma, pain, fear, and shame; usually shut away to keep them safe and to stop them from overwhelming the system
- Self - Calm, curious, creative, clear, connected, compassionate, confident, courageous; the YOU that's not a part.
