About this Event

WHAT IS THE REPAIRMONGERY?

The Leith Repairmongery is a new service, currently in the pilot stage, aiming to fix broken household items and give them a new life, as well as saving the waste and money involved in replacing things that are repairable.

_____

WHAT SORT OF THINGS DO YOU FIX?

Tools (both hand tools and power tools), small household electricals (lamps, kitchen gadgets, radios, etc), battery powered items, toys, and more!

We won’t take items for which a repair service already exists – for instance computers, vacuum cleaners, bicycles, or clothes – but we will direct you to someone who specialises in fixing that sort of thing. We also can’t take white goods (eg. washing machines or fridges), and we can’t fix anything that’s too big to bring into the workshop.

______

WHERE DO I DROP OFF MY ITEMS ?

We're based at Custom House and we’ll be having open intake days there once a month on the second Saturday of the month. Hopefully we’ll be able to offer drop-off at other times at various Tool Library locations. Until that’s set up, you can email Jessi to arrange a time to drop off your item.

______

DO I HAVE TO PAY?

No. During the pilot phase, repairs are free. Sadly our budget doesn’t cover spare parts, so we will charge for those at cost. As part of the research we’re doing, we will be asking customers how much they would pay for repairs, and we invite you to make a donation to the Tool Library if you’d like to.

______

WHO CAN GET THINGS FIXED ?

Anyone living or working in Leith is welcome to bring along their items for repair.

_____

WHO IS INVOLVED?

The project is being run by the Edinburgh Tool Library, with funding from Leith Chooses. Most of the repair work is done by our Repair Technician, Jessi. We’re hoping to work with local businesses, charities, and other organisations as appropriate.

________

MY BUSINESS OFFERS REPAIR SERVICES; ARE YOU TRYING TO COMPETE OR UNDERCUT ME?

Absolutely not! In fact we’d love to signpost people to your business. Please get in touch to let us know what sorts of things you repair and how we can put people in contact with you. If you’d like to leave flyers or business cards with us, we’ll be happy to hand them out.

________

WHAT IF I WANT TO LEARN TO REPAIR? FIX IT MYSELF?

Then you should pop by instead on the same day at our Meadowbank Tool Library for this month's Repair Café pop-up! You'll be able to repair your own items with access to tools and guidance from expert volunteers. Check out the link for more info and to reach out to them so that they can bring specific tools and material that might help you tackle your repair project.

______

I HAVE OTHER QUESTIONS; HOW CAN I GET IN TOUCH?

Come along to one of our intake days! The next one will be on Saturday 10 August from 10am till 2pm at Custom House (entrance via Dock Place). Future days are scheduled for the second Saturday of the month, and will be advertised on the Tool Library’s social media accounts. If you can’t make it to one of these intake days, you can email the Repair Technician at [email protected]
