-MR. VAN BUREN – The real estate man. A jovial, enthusiastic person in his late 40s.
-MRS. BOGGS – A tall, thin woman, 45 or so. She is a typical club woman type and a great organizer.
-ETHEL – The cook-housekeeper. Around 21. Attractive despite a rather flamboyant appearance. She has a New York accent and cooks with a touch of genius.
-DR. RANDOLPH – A tall, dark man about 40. He is a high-strung, rather nervous individual.
-THELMA BRECKENRIDGE – Joan’s aunt. Although it’s difficult to guess her correct age, she is about 38 and very chic. She is a gregarious person and an outrageous flirt.
-FLIP CANNON – A reporter for the Herald. An energetic, likeable sort of guy in his late 20s.
-MADAM LA SOLDA – Dr. Randolph’s mother. A strangely handsome woman rather than theatrically made up. Her clothes are bizarre-looking and she is a walking advertisement for a jewelry shop. She is a medium.
-AGATHA FORBES – The witch. Her voice is deep and unusual-sounding. She is tall, slim and moves with catlike grace. She dominates the stage.
SUMMARY:
Filled with bright, funny dialogue and a cast of thoroughly delightful characters, this comedy chronicles the hilarious plight of a young couple who move into a centuries-old house, only to find that it is haunted by a distressingly capricious, maddeningly tenacious yet undeniably appealing witch. As a cartoonist, Duff O’Hara can live where he chooses and, at the urging of his young bride, Joan, chooses a charming old house in Salem. Duff has misgivings when the realtor reluctantly admits that the house has one rather bizarre feature – it is visited each year by a slightly destructive witch named Agatha Forbes. Joan still wants the house, witch and all, so they settle in. By the time of Agatha’s annual visitation Duff and Joan decide to make a party of it, and hopefully a farewell one for Agatha. Joan’s Aunt Thelma comes to join the festivities for which the neighbors, Dr. Randolph and his mother (a medium, Madame La Solda), are also invited. As Agatha is a local legend the newspaper sends its star reporter, Flip Cannon, but the atmosphere of gaiety soon vanishes when the witch herself arrives in a cloud of smoke and bad temper. The results are uproarious. But Joan, fortunately, keeps her wits about her and solves the riddle of how to free Agatha from her house-haunting obligation.
