West Des Moines, IA - Tallgrass Theatre Company (TTC) and our Seedlings Children’s Programming announces auditions for The Boxcar Children by Jon Jory. The auditions will take place on Sunday, September 14th at 6:00 pm and Monday, September 15th, at 6:00 pm at 2019 Grand Ave, Suite 100, West Des Moines, IA.

The story: The audience is led by an ever-observant Stage Manager as our meta-theatrical guide in Jon Jory’s touching and magical adaptation of The Boxcar Children, the beloved children’s book created by teacher Gertrude Chandler Warner. This classic story of four precocious orphans finding their way in a small New England town is sure to tug on every audience member’s heartstrings.
Show Dates: November 7th through the 23rd, 2025, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2pm
Details: No need to prepare a monologue, the audition will consist of cuts from the script that will be provided at the theatre. Please arrive 15 mins early to fill out an audition sheet and bring along a current headshot and resume.
Roles Available: 5-12 actors, we encourage adults and children over the age of 7 to audition.
Stage Manager
• Gender/Age: Any
• Description:
A somewhat omniscient narrator who guides the audience through the story, providing key exposition and emotional context.
o Occasionally step into smaller roles to help move the plot forward.
o Requires strong stage presence and the ability to shift tone between narrator and character.
o Think of this role as the thread that ties the entire story together.
Henry
• Character Age: 15
• Gender: Male
• Traits: Responsible, intelligent, protective older brother; takes initiative to care for his siblings.
Jessie (Jess)
• Character Age: 14
• Gender: Female
• Traits: Mature, nurturing, takes on the "mother" role in the family.
Violet
• Character Age: 12
• Gender: Female
• Traits: Sensitive, quiet, artistic; deeply empathetic and observant.
Benny
• Character Age: 8
• Gender: Traditionally male, can be played by a female
• Traits: Playful, curious, stubborn, provides humor to the group.
Ensemble which includes various ages and genders.
• All performers in the ensemble will likely play multiple characters, including JH Cordyce the children's estranged grandfather, friendly Dr. McCallister and his perceptive mother, various townspeople, or other children.
• Requires strong physical and character versatility to distinguish between roles.
