OOIOO has always created a musical language all its own. Under the leadership of YoshimiO, a founding member of Boredoms, the group has recorded music that have subverted expectations and warped perceptions of what constitutes pop and experimental music.
OOIOO began as a fictitious band for a photo shoot for Switch magazine in 1996. The all-female four-piece ensemble includes Yoshimi, guitarist Kayan, bassist Aya and Ritsuko Mishina on drums. The band quickly gained attention by being the opening act for Sonic Youth in 1997. While the band’s tours of the United States are infrequent, they are as the New York Times has stated, transcendent - taking their love of indigenous music into an entirely new dimension by freely weaving organic and electric tones into a vivid tapestry, employing their keen sense of color and texture.
OOIOO's music is constantly evolving from release to release, from one band to another. Intense performers and creators, drawing from a wide range of influences, the band has invented a heartfelt musical language that is eclectic yet accessible and completely their own - dense and frantic. Hassan K is the solo project of Franco-Iranian artist Keyvane Alinaghi. A sound artist and DIY tinkerer, hacker using free software. On stage, he performs a unique and extreme live experience, bordering on trance. He crafts and repurposes traditional instruments (a microtonal guitar enhanced with sensors, a robotic santoor, an electric zurna) to get as close as possible to the audience and create compositions at the intersection of mystical Persian rituals and contemporary music. Bollywoodcore, oriental surf music, hindustrial techno… a blend of swing, cyber-metal, electronica, harsh noise, and rock in opposition, amplified by the sounds of Iranian spiritual knighthood.
